ISC Connections 6:Ethics

26 04 2011

I was watching SportsCenter earlier today and heard a story that I found very intresting.  It had to deal with the Ohio State head football coach Jim Tressel.  So, I decided to go online and do some research about this topic.  He is in alot of trouble with the NCAA because he knowingly played ineligble players and he lied to the NCAA about the information.  He knew that certain players on his team were receiving benefits from someone.  He did not tell this information to the NCAA because he didnt want to lose his players.  This goes against the ethics of coaches in the college ranks.

As a college coach if you know that your players our receiving money or other benefits, you must report this to the NCAA right away.  If not you are cheating because those players should not be allowed to play. The NCAA sets these rules for every school to follow, and if you do not follow them it is the morally wrong thing to do.  Now the school and team are facing an NCAA investigation, which can damage the school.

Jim Tressel has given a bad image to his name and Ohio State University.  Everyone is going to see them as cheaters, and their credability is destroyed.  It is going to be hard for him to recurit players now because we know he is a liar.  He wont be able to tell players anymore that they do all the right things at Ohio State.  He has lost all the prestige he built in his tenure at Ohio State.

We learned in class that you always have to do the morally right thing.  You must have a set a of ethics that you live your life by.  By living your life based on these ethics people will trust you and you will give credibilty to your name.  As we learned this is critical when your dealing with public relations because you want to build prestige to your organization.

ISC Topic 7:

26 04 2011

This class is about doing your blogs.  I have learned that in these past couple of weeks.  It is a really good tool to have but it is hard to master.  The key is being able to maintain your blogs on a daily basis.  If you’re able to do this and your good at writing then you can make this a career.  This field is rapidly growing due to the increase roll of the internett in the public relations field.  Make sure that you stay on top of these blogs.  Have them done by the dates Dr. McArthur has on the syllabus, even though he does not look at them till the end of the semester.  It will be a lot of work if you wait until the last few weeks to finish them all.

The next thing is to make sure you get the labs turn in on time.  They are usually due on Mondays, so I know it is easy to forget about them over the weekend.  Dr. McArthur will take off ten points every day it is late, and labs are forty percent of your final grade in the class so it is very important to get full credit on them.  Also, make sure you put the time and effort into them because you do not want to lose any points due to little grammar mistake.

My third tip for this class is to make sure you read the chapters.  All the information on the test comes from the book.  Also, reading the chapters will make writing the blog post a lot easier.  This will help you to with the lab because they always correspond with the chapters we are learning that week.

Next,  if you fall behind or do not understand a topic ask Dr. McArthur he will help you out a lot.  If you are going to miss class on a lab day let him know in advance.  Dr. McArthur will give you the work you will miss this way you do not fall behind.  So do not stress if you feel like your falling behind because he will help you out.

My last tip is to go in to this class with open mind.  I know that there is a bunch of work in this class, but you will learn a lot from doing it.  Just put the time and effort into this class because it will teach you everything  about the public relations field.  I have learned a great amount this semester, and I will be able to use this information in my career field.

  • You do a really good job with describing social media. I like how you tied in everything we learned in class about this subject. The importance for a company to have a blog, so customers can hear what is going on with the company. This way they can feel like they are part of your company. I also like the video at the end. The picture is also good because it shows just a small sample of all the social media web sites. It really shows how important social media is becoming in the public relations field.

  • In my Integrated Strategic Communication class at Queens University, we learned the importance of blogging in today’s society. We learned the importance of having the skills to maintain a blog on a daily bases. Our professor told us that there are numerous jobs available in this field. So you having this blog post just proves his point about how easy it is to find a job in this field. This is a good web site you always have the latest news with the panthers. I always get up to date about their latest news when reading your blogs.

  • This is a really good blog, you give alot a good details about the crsis management field, and how to deal with a crsis. I really like how you use the Tiger Woods scandal when talking about crsis management. I agree with what you said that Tiger should have never lied about what happened. If he would have been honest from the beginning than it would not have gone on for so long. Instead, he lied and made this scandal go on for month. He also lost alot of endorsements to because his image is ruined, and it will take him a while to fix it.

  • You do a really good job describing how you need to use public relations, advertising, and marketing to sell a product. Just like we learned in class you need to be able to use all three of these things to successfully sell your product. You gave good examples on how you might use these things in today’s society. For example online marketing which is huge right now. Alot of companies do their advertising on social media websites. Companies especially advertise on Facebook when their target market is young adults.

  • This tornado did alot of damage to North Carolina. Alot of businesses and colleges were badly damaged, as you metioned. This release has alot to do with public relations because how many news reports were done on this topic. When this happened every news station had coverage of this event. They were showing pictures and videos of the damage. Just like the video you have at the end of the entry. When something like this happens it is very important for news stattion to have detsil coverage. People want to stay inform about what happened, especially when it was so close to home.

  • I feel the same way Steve, the news wasted so much time talking about Lindsay Lohan. I don’t understand, I mean why do they always talk about her. Do they just put her in the news, so people can feel better about themselves. All i know is her public relation people must always be working. Also, everytime she is on the news they are always saying somethinng bad. I wonder when was the last time that she received good publicity? She needs to get her life in order and stop getting introuble. Also the media needs to stop talking about her because no one cares about what she is doing.

  • First, I want to say that your website looks great. I can tell that you put alot of time and effort into it. I really like this article, it was really informative. I didn’t know that Mel finally decided to come out and say something. I don’t understand why he waited so long though. He should have taken some king of action when this happened, to explain his side. Like we learned in class you want to tell the truth and you want to tell it quickly. That is why I am so shocked that he waited for weeks after the situation happened. I also like the poll you have at the end of the blog. How where you able to do that?

  • Thanks for creating this blog. I am a huge 24 fan, and I’m still depressed the show went off air. Last year, after they made the announcement that season eight was the last season. I heard rumors that they were going to produce a 24 movie. However, I havent heard anything since then. I’m glad they are still planning on producing this movie, I can’t wait for them to start flimming. I wish the public relations people would create a press release to let the fans know more about this movie.

I mean they focus all their time reporting what this family ‘s personal life, but they never say anything about how they arre helping their country. I don’t know maybe it because I am a guy but to me they are making to big of a deal about this wedding. I bet there over thousand of public relations people reporting every day about this wedding.

  • These suggestions are perfect for this class. I put some of the same ones in my own blog. The biggest thing in this class is maintaining the blog which was one of the hardest things for me to do. I kept putting it off and next thing I know theres three weeks left of school and I have over thirty blogs to do. I really like the pictures you put into the blog post. I think they fit perfect with the message you were trying to get across. They also added some humor to the post.

  • I think this story received so much coverage because of the location of where it happened. South park is a nice area which never has any problems. People who live their feel care-free they never worry about something bad happening to them. Another reason is people who live in this community want answers. They want to know why this happen. This is because for the first time they realize their life could be in danger. So the news station that can give these answer will receive more viewers, and I believe that is the reason for all the coverage.

  • This was a great blog post. I am a business major so I knew alot about advertising and marketing, so this is also one of my favorite chapters. I never realized before how much public relations affects marketing and advertising. You do a great job explaining this in your post. That commercial at the end is also very funny, and goes along perfectly with this topic. Also i like how you talk about building your brand name. The tips on how to buid your brand are the same ones I learned in Dr. Brooks’ marketing class.

  • I really like this blog post. You did a good explaining how they are still protesting over Egypt, even though the ir president has resigned. I also like how you talk about how this effect us in America. While thier over their protesting, we our paying the price in the cost of oil. Ever since these problems started the price of gas has sky rocketed. We just dont feel this pain when we fill up our cars. Now we are seeing the effect on groceries. Most companies had to raise the price of their products because they also have to make up the difference in the price of gas. This increase is hurting our stock market because people are not purchasing as much goods now because they can not afford them.

  • I found this case very interesting because there are so many questions. First, off why would she even bring up this story if it happened so long ago. Next, how come the white house didnt do an investigation before they made her quit on her way home from work. Also, why didnt questioning the source, and then they would realize the person had edited the video. This is why you can never believe everything you see or hear on the internet. There are alot of people who will make up lies to get national attention.

I also gave a similiar definition it has to do with public relations. Also anything to do with the organization image. By far blogging is for sure the number one tool that we learned in this class.

  • This is was a very informative blog post. I agree with you he is the number one headline in Hollywood. Every week your it is like what is Charlie going to do this week to embrass himself. This is not good for him his image has gone to nothing. CBS cancelled the number one comedy in America because of how bad it has become. It has become more of a problem dealing with all of Charlie’s problems. Charlie is going to need a miracle work by public relation people to save his image.

  • Yes endorsement mean alot to kids. When you are young you want to to do everything to be like your favortie athlete. When I was growing up I wanted everything that Michael Jordan would wear. I also had a pair of Nike basketball shoes like the ones he played in. I would wear his jersey everytime I would play basketball. Comapnies know this and that is why they have these popular athletes endorse their projects. Its to bad that Tiger lost all of his popular to endorse product because he always made some cool commercials.

  • How could late night television survive with out infommercials. I believe the most important part of this commercials is the speaker rather than the product. He has to draw attention from the audience so he can show off the product. That is why they need someone who is loud and can really get people’s attention. For example like the sham-wow guy. Him and Billy Mays are probably the best at infommercials of all time. You have to be really good with use persuasion skills to be sucessful to sell your product. When thinking back at infommercials what do you remember first the product or how crazy the guy is promoting the product.

ISC Connections 7: Rex Ryan

26 04 2011

I have decided to do my last blog post on the very outspoken head coach of the New York Jets, Rex Ryan.  Rex Ryan is one of the top coaches in the NFL.  However, he is best known for what he says.  He doesn’t care what he says, he just tells it how it is.  It doesn’t matter if his comments will hurt someone he will still say them.  Last summer Ryan drew a lot of criticism for excessive amount of curse words he uses.  The Jets were featured on the HBO series, Hardknocks, last summer.  They would follow the team around training camp, and film them working out.  Some announcers said that Ryan cussed at his players too much.  They suggested he needed to calm down and stop using such offensive language.  Rex just said that is just the way he is and that wont change.

Rex has a book coming out coming out soon called “Play Like You Mean It”.  In an article on ESPN.com, they said Rex is calling out people in his book.  He calls out a former player of his for being selfish.  He also said that he was more into looking pretty than actually playing football.  He also made a bold prediction saying the Giants will be playing in the shadows as long as he is the coach of the Jets.  As you can tell he likes to start some controversies.

Rex’s care-free style of word choices makes him a target for the media.  Reporters cant wait to interview him so they can hear what he will say next.  Also, they will take everything he says and try to pu a controversial spin on to it.  I believe the media will have a field day when this book comes out.  All this being said I wonder if Rex even has any public relations personnel.  If I had to take a guess my answer would be no.  Even if he does I doubt he even listens to them.

This will take you the Espn article about his book.

Here is some of the best interviews with Rex Ryan.

ISC Topic 6

26 04 2011

I  have a learned a lot since the first day of class.  This class has taught me a lot about the public relations field.  The most important thing I have learned is blogging.  This class was the first time that I ever had a blog.  I was terrible with it at first I didnt know what I was doing.  I really struggled with my first blog post to get to the three hundred word minum.  Now I can write three hundred very easily.  This class taught me the importance of keeping up with a blog daily.  This is a very important skill to have for a public relations career.  This field is growing very quickly and there are a lot of high paying jobs just to maintain a blog for an organization.

At the beginning of the semester, in my first blog, I took a guess that strategtic communication had to with public relations.  I took that guess because the name of our book.  Now I know strategtic communication is all the different aspects of public relation.  It has to do with writing press releases all the way to dealing with a crisis.  The main goal of strartegtic communication  is to protect your organization’s image.  Then you use strategic communication to persuade the public to create a positive image of your organization.

I think everything I have learned in this class will help me with my future career.  Also, throughout  the course of the semester I believe this class has helped improved my writing.  My writing is my biggest weakness, but with all the writing I have done for this it has given the oppurtunity to improve it.  Also, this class got me invlolved in the twitter world.  I never used it before this class but now I have been using it a lot.  It’s a good way to get yourself out into the public and companies will even pay you for maintaing a twitter account for them.  I really believe this class has improved my public relations skill in so many areas.

ISC Connections 5: Crisis Manganement Kobe Bryant

24 04 2011

On Tuesday, April 12, 2011 during a game against the San Antonio Spurs, Kobe Bryant created a crisis for him and hin public relations team.  After receiving a technical foul he was not happy and started complaining to the referees.  Lakers’ head coach Phil Jackson took Kobe out of the game to calm down.  When Kobe got to the bench he threw a towel and heating pad to the ground.  Then yelled the referee’s name, but then he said a gay slur to the referee which gave him the technical foul.  This game was being televised on nationally television, and how a lot of viewers due to the playoff implications of this game.

After he said the gay slur people started twitter trends about, and also started to blog about this offensive slur he had said.  Kobe’s image was rapidly receiving a lot of negative comments.  This crisis was national in minutes, and was all over the late night edition of sports center.  Early Wednesday morning, Kobe called ESPN to issue an apology statement.  This was his statement; “My actions were out of frustration during the heat of the game, period.  The words expressed do NOT reflect my feelings towards the gay and lesbian communities and were NOT meant to offend anyone” (Kobe Bryant).

This was important that he responded so quickly to the remarks.  He owned up to what he did and apologize for what happened.  Also, he did said the remarks were not meant to offend anyone by saying that slur.  Kobe also said he was going to down more to reach out to the gay and lesbian communities.  By the end of Wednesday, people did not talk about what Kobe said rather how sincere his apology.  Then people started to forgive him for what happened, and by thursday no one talked about this issue.

Kobe’s public relations people did an excellent job achieving the three goals of a crisis.  First to end the crisis, limit the damage done, and to restore creditability to the organization.  They were able to end this crisis within the next day.  Their was not much damage done to his image, and his credibility was restored after the sincere apology.  As we learned in class it is critical to achieve this goals, or your organization will be in a lot of trouble.

Here is a link to the article if you would like to here the whole story.

ISC Coneections 4: Public Image

24 04 2011

This morning I was reading the Charlotte Observer and found an interesting article.  This article had to do with five time Sprint Cup Champion, Jimmie Johnson.  He was donating one thousand dollars to every Lowes employee at the Sanford, NC store whose car was damaged from the tornadoes last week.  Lowe’s sponsors his race car, so this is the reason he wanted to donate money to their employees.  His team owner, Rick Hendrick, will also help with the donations.  The one thousand dollars will be a credit at any Hendrick car dealerships for a new or used car, or repairs to their damaged vehicles.

I think this is a great public relations move for both people involved.  It  really helps to create a positive public image for them.  Especially because it is targeting the public’s emotions.  Everyone feels bad for those people who were effected by those storms, it helps to hit the emotions of the public by helping these unfortunate people out.  This move will show people they like to give back to the community, which is very important because the public loves athletes that use their money to give back to their community.

I think this is a very wise business move for Rick Hendrick.  With giving people the one thousand dollar credit to his dealerships this will increase sales, people buying new or used cars, and people bringing their cars to his auto body shops to fix the damage.  While creating a good public image, he will be increasing profits, which is a great move.

I think this article is very important to our class because we learned the importance of public image.  This is the main goal of public relations to persuade public opinion of your organization, which is the reason why their public relations suggested this idea to them.  This was a wise decision because they were able to achieve their goal.  People commented after the article saying how nice it was for them to do this for these people.
